In 1932, carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen founded his company in Billund, Denmark with the goal of promoting inventive play and ingenuity among children. At first, he made stepladders, however, the effects of the Great Depression forced him to adapt and evolve his business model. He shifted his focus on the manufacturing of toys and established one of history’s most beloved brands.

Christiansen was a forward-thinker and quick to adapt new technologies and materials. In 1947, he became the first company to purchase an injection molding machine made of plastic in the world. This greatly increased the capabilities and range of Lego products. The machine also let him test a design that would later become the iconic Lego brick. The bricks were hollow on the bottom and had pegs on the top. They interlocked to allow children to create intricate structures that were more complex than those created by wooden blocks of previous generations.

The 1950s was a time of growth for the company. Kjeld Kirk Christiansen, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen’s daughter, joined the management team and commenced modernizing the manufacturing processes of the company. The expansion included the launch dollhouses, furniture and individual figures called Minifigures. In 1979, the company expanded into space with sets featuring astronaut minifigures and rockets, lunar rovers, and spaceships, as well as into the medieval realm with a Castle theme.

In 1990, the company released three Model Team Sets that were designed for advanced builder. These sets contained small pieces like axles, levers, gears and other components. They were the first Lego sets to offer an element of realism and precision.
